Two recently promoted researchers from Radboud university medical center will conduct research at foreign research institutions with a Rubicon grant from NWO and ZonMw. For many scientists, experience abroad is an important step in their career. The program offers young, promising scientists this opportunity.

Different brain cells and their role in behavior

Mandy Meijer will go from Radboudumc / Radboud University Nijmegen to the University of British Columbia, British Columbia Children’s Hospital Research Institute in Canada for two years.

Brains consist of different types of cells, which determine brain function and how someone behaves. It is impossible to study brain cells in living people. The researcher will develop new methods to measure brain cells based on peripheral blood and study their role in behavior and brain development in children.

Breaking the cycle: A systems approach to sleep, depression, and Alzheimer’s across the lifespan

Jeroen Uleman will leave Radboud University Medical Center for two years at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

There is no treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Even more worrying, prevention strategies have limited success in the elderly. To develop effective strategies for earlier in life, the researcher will use computer simulations focused on sleep and mental health to find interventions that prevent later cognitive decline.

About the Rubicon program

The grant makes it possible for young researchers to conduct research at a foreign institute that offers the best environment for their research. The amount of financing depends on the chosen destination and the duration of the stay. NWO and ZonMw can finance around sixty young researchers per year (for a total amount of 7 million euros, spread over 3 rounds). The allocations in this message concern the second financing round of 2023.
