Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, United States.

At the age of 17 he went to live in New York.

Then he traveled to Philadelphia, where he worked as an apprentice in a printing company until he managed to open his own company.

The Pennsylvania Gazette, a general and political information publication in which Franklin contributed articles and drawings, was printed there.

In 1731 he created the first reading cabinet in America.

He also founded the first police and fire department.

And he ordered the paving of the streets of Philadelphia.

In 1736 he served in the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly and was postmaster for the British Colony.

Franklin was one of the protagonists of the fight against the sovereignty of England over his country.

In pursuit of that, he participated in the drafting of the Independence Treaty of 1776.

In addition, from that year until 1785 he was the United States ambassador in Paris.

He also knew how to stand out as an inventor.

He created the first bladder probe -a security system at the bottom of ships-, the lightning rod and the odometer -used to calculate mail delivery routes-.

However, one of his most recognized designs was the first prototype of bifocal lenses.

These allowed for the first time to see both far and near with the same crystals.

For that, Franklin decided to cut the lenses of his two types of glasses in half.

He arranged them so that the bottom can be used for reading.

This meant a big change for those who had to change their lenses permanently.

In 1985, Franklyn was elected president of the state of Pennsylvania, a position he held until 1788 when he joined the convention that crafted the United States Constitution.

In 1789 he published a treatise against slavery, which he presented a year later in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

His proposal was immediately criticized by congressmen who supported slavery and sparked a debate among lawmakers.

He finally died in Philadelphia on April 17, 1790.

On May 23, 1785, Benjamin Franklin announced the invention of bifocals.

The story is also news on Radio Perfil. Screenplay by Sebastián Rojas and voice over by Pita Fortín.
