There is a strange silence in the corridors of the Forum in Assago, just outside Milan: there are a few hours left until the start of the show, the band is having dinner and the dressing room of Raffaele Riefoli, aka Raf, is closed. Only the costume designer comes in, to make the final touch with the glittering jacket that the artist will wear during the concert, and his wife Gabriella Labate, who follows out the door to greet us. The gates open and the front rows begin to fill. They are all here to celebrate Raf’s 40 year career and his historic “Self Control” hit. The concert starts a few minutes late and ends with the very romantic “Infinito”: we are Sorrisi, still excited for the big finale, to join the singer in the dressing room.
How long will it take to recover from a concert like this?
«We want a holiday (riding)! But I’m afraid I have to postpone it, now I’ll continue the tour until December.”
Are you happy with how it went?
«Before starting there was a little tension because we could not try hard. My team put their hearts into getting everything ready. Anything could have happened, but it turned out very well.”
Were there any other unexpected events?
«Two days before the concert I got a bad sore throat».
We noticed him from his table in the dressing room, he is full of lemons!
«I know, it’s like a herbalist’s shop. I prepared herbal teas based on erysimus and thyme, which are good for the vocal cords. And then there is never a shortage of honey.”
Her whole family was in the front row laughing for her.
«I was so happy to see them under the degree. And we also celebrated my son Samuele’s birthday! He was moved when I sang “Iperbole”, it is dedicated to him».
Samuele tried to follow his footsteps in the world of music. Do you think this might be the right way for him too?
«At the moment he is focused on his studies, he wants to finish university. I must say that he writes very well, he has his own style. Perhaps, when he has more time, he will be able to cultivate this passion without stress.”
I have to admit that Samuele was not the only one who moved: the moment with his wife Gabriella was really emotional.
« During the song “Come una favola” I saw her on the side of the stage and I went to get her. We danced together, it was very intense.”
He dedicated beautiful words to Gabriella: «She was always there even before I met her, she gives meaning to everything». Was it love at first sight?
« Of course yes! We met in Rai’s studio during a broadcast, she thought I was one of those arrogant singers who push themselves around. Actually I was awkward and much more shy than today. She understood it immediately and it was the right key to contact me. Our journey together spanned more than 30 years.”
Now, how do you manage your shyness?
«It was always linked to the fact that I am too hard on myself and my constant fear of making mistakes. It’s been a long post but I can say I’ve made progress. The only place I feel safe is the stage, everything disappears there.”
“Self-control” has turned 40 years old but has stood the test of time.
« Yes, it is very incredible. It has also reached new generations thanks to TikTok and the remixes from many international DJs, who often play it at festivals. Time passes, the sounds change but “oh oh” never loses its magic.”
Speaking of remixes, with the dance version of ”Il battest animali” he made the whole Forum dance.
« J-Ax and I already knew each other, but never had the opportunity to sing together, this was the first time. Also, this version will be part of a special project I’m working on…”.
When will it come out?
«There is no exact date yet. I can tell you that the version of “What will remain of the 80s” created by Giuliano Sangiorgi, another guest of the evening, will also be there.
On social media he received support from Laura Pausini. Are you friends?
« Yes, always. He is a special person. I invited her but… she’s a very busy girl! She sent me her love and I know, as well as being a friend, she would also come as a fan.”
Umberto Tozzi could not be missing.
“We did two trips together, one before Covid and one right after. We had a lot of fun.”
Tozzi recently announced his retirement from concerts. Have you ever thought about it?
« It takes courage to say ‘enough’, it is not easy. When the time comes, I will do it without any big announcements.”
After 40 years of career, do you still have any aspirations?
«Continue to be calm doing this job. As long as I have energy, I want to continue giving everything, to myself and to those who listen to me.”
How has Raf maintained his relevance in the music industry for over 40 years?
Title: A Night to Remember: Raf’s 40-Year Celebration Concert
An Engaging Interview between Time.news Editor and Music Expert
Editor: Good evening, everyone! Today, we are pleased to have with us a specialist in the music industry, Dr. Clara Moretti. We recently attended Raf’s concert at the Forum in Assago, celebrating four decades of his career, particularly his iconic hit “Self Control.” Clara, welcome!
Clara: Thank you! It’s great to be here and discuss such an iconic figure in the music world.
Editor: The atmosphere at Raf’s concert was electric, wasn’t it? It felt like both a celebration and a heartfelt tribute. What stood out to you the most about the event?
Clara: Absolutely! The moment Raf dedicated a song to his son, Samuele, was incredibly touching. It was a beautiful reminder of the personal stories that intertwine with an artist’s career. Seeing his family in the front row added a layer of intimacy to the concert.
Editor: Speaking of family, Raf has described the emotional interaction he had with his wife, Gabriella, during the song “Come una favola.” How important do you think these personal connections are for artists in front of a live audience?
Clara: They are crucial! Personal connections help establish authenticity. When the audience senses that genuine emotion, it enhances their experience. It’s not just a performance; it becomes a shared moment. Raf’s acknowledgment of his partner and family conveys vulnerability, making the performance even more relatable and impactful.
Editor: It’s hard to believe “Self Control” has been around for 40 years yet remains so relevant, especially with platforms like TikTok popularizing it again. What are your thoughts on how digital platforms affect the longevity of classic hits?
Clara: Digital platforms have revolutionized how music is consumed. TikTok, for example, allows new generations to discover and reinterpret classic songs, which can significantly revive interest in an artist’s catalogue. It’s fascinating how Raf’s music, which is already timeless, finds new life and context through these modern tools.
Editor: During the concert, Raf mentioned his struggle with shyness and how the stage is the only place where he feels comfortable. How does the dynamic of performing live differ for artists who battle personal insecurities?
Clara: That’s a profound point. For many artists, the stage can be both a refuge and a battleground. Raf’s experience shows how performing can be cathartic, allowing them to express emotions they might find difficult in everyday life. It’s a transformation; under those lights, they embody their artistry fully, which sometimes helps them combat their insecurities.
Editor: You also got a glimpse into Raf’s preparations before the concert—lemon remedies and herbal teas to combat his sore throat. How essential do you think pre-concert rituals are in an artist’s routine, particularly for someone with Raf’s legacy?
Clara: Rituals are significant for artists. They provide a sense of control and readiness in an otherwise chaotic environment. For seasoned artists like Raf, these rituals may also be tied to their years of experience, incorporating tradition into their craft as a way of honoring their journey. It’s a blend of professionalism and superstition.
Editor: Lastly, reflecting on Raf’s career, which has spanned over 40 years, what do you think sets him apart from other artists who may not achieve the same longevity?
Clara: Raf’s ability to evolve while maintaining his core identity is key. He understands the importance of reinvention and adaptation in the ever-changing music landscape. His connection with fans and the intimate storytelling within his music resonate deeply, forging lasting relationships that transcend generations.
Editor: Thank you, Clara, for your incredible insights! It’s evident that Raf’s concert was not just a celebration of his music but a reflection of his life, family, and ongoing journey. We look forward to more discussions about the ever-evolving music landscape!
Clara: Thank you! I had a great time discussing Raf’s legacy. Here’s to more memorable concerts that leave us inspired!
