Rafael Correa rejects the suggestion that Pamela Aguirre voted for the Tourism Law in exchange for the governorship of Imbabura. A disciplinary body will decide the fate of the assembly members.

Former President Rafael Correa broke a silence of more than 48 hours on March 24 to refer to the seven assembly members of the Citizen Revolution who abandoned the party line to vote for the tourism law proposed by President Daniel Noboa.

He did so to announce that it will be the movement’s ethics committee that will decide the fate of the legislators. But, above all, to defend one of them: Pamela Aguirre, who is part of the group that aligned itself with the government.

Correa’s reaction occurred in the face of insinuations, on social networks, that the change of governor in Imbabura, the province where Aguirre is from, coincided with his vote contrary to what the majority of the bench decided.

Aguirre, who is the president of the Assembly’s Oversight Commission, is one of the staunchest activists of Correismo, so her decision to break the movement’s discipline came as a surprise.

«We cannot allow “speculation” with companions who have risked their lives. The vote in favor of a law that has big traps will be decided by the Ethics Committee, but that will never be able to erase what Pamela has done for the RC5, Imbabura and the Homeland,” Correa wrote in X.

Also voting in favor of the law were Marcela Holguin, Xavier Jurado, Henry Bósquez, Milton Aguas, Johanna Ortiz and Pierina Correa, sister of former president Rafael Correa, although there has been no express defense for her until now.

Assembly members like Blasco Luna even described them as “Judas” and assured that, despite the fact that it was explained to them that the government’s regulations were harmful to the country, their personal interests took precedence.

Disciplinary instances

The former presidential candidate and president of the Citizen Revolution, Luisa González, had already warned that disciplinary actions will be initiated for the assembly members who voted in favor of the Executive law. According to the movement’s website, within the political bureau, there is a body called the disciplinary council. It’s conformed by:

Miguel Calahorrano, former Minister of Energy and former ambassador to Spain.

Carlos Zambrano, former assemblyman.

Esteban León Villegas.
