Polish police chief Jaroslav Szymczyk was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a gift he received from a Ukrainian official exploded, the Polish interior ministry said on Thursday. “On Wednesday morning at 07:50 an explosion occurred in a room near the police chief’s office,” the statement said. “One of the gifts the police chief received during his working visit to Ukraine on December 11 and 12 exploded.”

Szymczyk met the heads of Ukraine’s police and emergency services during the visit, and the gift was from one of the heads of Ukraine’s special forces, the Polish Ministry of the Interior told the media. According to reports in Poland, his injuries were described as minor, and he remains in hospital under observation.

In addition, a citizen who works at the national headquarters of the police also suffered minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment. “The Polish side asked the Ukrainian side to provide an explanation,” the ministry said.
