Former India captain Wasim Jaffer has suggested that Rahane should have captained India because he did not play in the second Test.

India play 3 Tests and 3 ODIs in South Africa. India won the first Test at Centurion by 113 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the Test series. However, the South African team won the 2nd Test in Johannesburg by 7 wickets and drew the series 1-1. When he chased down the target of 240 runs, T.A. Captain Elgar scored 96 and Van der Dusen 40 to help the team to victory. Elgar was chosen as the man of the match. The 3rd Test starts on January 11 in Cape Town.

Virat Kohli did not play in the 2nd Test due to injury. Thus, the captain of the Indian team K.L. Rahul acted. Former India captain Wasim Jaffer has said in an interview that Rahane should have acted as the captain of the Indian team as he did not play in the 2nd Test. He added:

The decision of the Indian team management comes as a surprise to me. Rahane, who has never lost a Test as a captain and won the Test series in Australia, was replaced by KL as Test captain. Want to give it to Rahul?

K.L. I did not speak against Rahul. He is a young player. Served as captain of Punjab Kings. Think of him as a future captain. But Rahane said he should have acted as captain in the absence of the goalie.
