India’s senior businessman Rahul Bajaj passed away in Pune on Saturday. He is 83 years old.
He passed away at 2.30 pm today.
The PTI news agency has confirmed his death. The news further said that Rahul Bajaj had pneumonia and heart related disease. He had been hospitalized for the past one month due to ill health.
Rahul Bajaj has long been the chairman of the Bajaj Group, one of the oldest industrial companies in the country. He was known as the outspoken voice of the industry. He was confident in speaking honestly on all issues.
Rahul Bajaj was born on June 30, 1938 in Kolkata. He has been the Chairman of Bajaj Group for over 40 years. He was appointed ‘Emeritus President’ following his resignation from the presidency in April last year. In 2001 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. He has also been a member of the States.
Rahul Bajaj is known for speaking openly. He never hesitated to speak openly, despite concerns about corporate dominance in India and matters of national interest. According to the Business Standard newspaper, Rahul Bajaj has always said that he is always against power at a function organized by the Economic Times. Rahul Bajaj entered the state assembly in 2006 as an independent with the support of the BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena. But he said in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, “People (industrialists) are afraid to look at you (Modi government). When there was a UPA-2 government, we were able to criticize anyone. But now it does not seem like you like to criticize openly.” He said that.

Rahul Bajaj made his team Bajaj a leader in the automobile industry in the country with his business savvy. Bajaj scooter has gained great popularity under his leadership. The ‘Hamara Bajaj’ advertisement for this scooter became like the national anthem. It became a symbol of India’s independence.
In the 1970s, the Italian company Piaggio began to manufacture scooters under its own brands, Cedac and Super, as Bajaj did not renew its license.

He opposed the licensing system. The scooter was booked in the seventies-eighties due to the license and had to wait years for delivery. Rahul Bajaj spoke against this.
He said if the country happens to go to jail for producing supplies for the people, I will go.
Senior journalist DK Arun told BBC Hindi that despite Bajaj’s opposition to the license permit government, he was the voice of the domestic industry.
“Rahul Bajaj also spoke openly against the industrial reforms of 1992-94, arguing that this would set back the Indian industry and make it harder for domestic companies to compete,” says Arun.

Rahul’s name and Indira Gandhi
When Rahul Bajaj was born, Indira Gandhi went to the house of Congress leader Kamal Nayan Bajaj (Rahul’s father) and complained to his wife that he had taken a valuable item from her. Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to name his favorite ‘Rahul’ after Indira’s son. But Nehru gave the name to the son of the earlier born Kamal Nayan Bajaj.
Later Indira Gandhi named Rajiv Gandhi’s son Rahul. Because this name is very dear to his father.

Like his father Kamal Nayan Bajaj, Rahul Bajaj was educated abroad.
After studying economics at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, Rahul Bajaj trained at Bajaj Electricals for about three years. He was also studying law at the University of Bombay at the time.
Rahul Bajaj holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, USA in the 1960s.
After graduating in 1968, at the age of 30, Rahul Bajaj became the CEO of Bajaj Auto Limited.
He said products like Bajaj Sedak (scooter) and Bajaj Pulsar (motorcycle) had enhanced the brand credibility of its brand in the market, which is why the company’s business, which was worth Rs 3 crore in 1965, was able to reach around Rs 10,000 crore in 2008.
Rahul Bajaj was once a member of the States. He has been the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He has been the President of the Automobile Manufacturers Association of India (SIAM) and the President of Indian Airlines. Recipient of the Padma Bhushan Award.

Bajaj who gave his wife the credit for his success
Rahul Bajaj had said in an interview with senior journalist Karan Thapar in 2016 that when Rupa and I got married in 1961, it was the first romantic marriage in the entire Marwari-Rajasthani industrial house in India.
“Rupa is a Brahmin from Maharashtra. His father is a civil servant. It was a bit difficult to reconcile the two families as we are a business family. But I respect Rupa very much because I learned a lot from him,” he noted.
