Rahul Gandhi Challenges PM Modi to Public Debate on Treason Claims

Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi escalated his standoff with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 3, 2026, releasing a video challenge that invited the prime minister to a public debate on foreign connections, financial systems, and allegations of treason, while proposing that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat act as a judge.

The latest challenge follows a public address on October 31, 2026, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition of obstructing development and acting as a barrier rather than a constructive opposition during an address in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, marking the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Modi stated that the opposition was spreading rumors through social media and asked who was meeting anti-national forces in secret abroad.

Gandhi specified several topics for the proposed discussion, including the national financial structure, how trade deals with the United States were conducted, why cabinet members were not informed about certain agreements, the closure of the Gautam Adani case, and references to Jeffrey Epstein, as reported by Webdunia. He also suggested that National Volunteer Organisation (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat could serve as an impartial judge for the encounter, as noted by Prabhasakshi.

Cabinet Ministers and BJP Leaders Respond

Union Cabinet ministers and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figures rejected the challenge, pointing instead to parliamentary forums. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed the challenge by comparing the opposition’s rhetoric to fringe ideologies. This is just like Islamic radicals talking about secularism, separatists holding Indian flags, and anarchists showing the book of the Constitution, Rijiju said, as cited by AajTak, adding that high-level debates require mature participants rather than those advancing the agenda of foreign adversaries.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman wrote on the social media platform X that Parliament is the designated venue for such discussions, according to TNP News. Sitharaman noted that when parliamentary sessions are convened, the opposition frequently walks out rather than staying to hear responses. As LoP, you are expected to show some seriousness and responsibility, Sitharaman stated, according to Jagran, urging Gandhi to bring factual evidence to the legislature rather than circulating lengthy lists of accusations. Home Minister Amit Shah previously offered a special session in parliament to debate electronic voting machines and SIR processes.

BJP MP Nishankant Dubey offered a counter-invitation, stating on social media that he was prepared to debate Gandhi directly at the party or congressional office concerning financial papers and foreign ties before any challenge is issued to senior leadership, according to Navbharat Times.
