“Franco Battiato. The Long Journey” Biopic to Explore the Life of Italian Music Icon

A compelling new biopic, “Franco Battiato. The Long Journey,” will delve into the life and artistic evolution of one of Italy’s most celebrated musicians. The film, directed by Renato De Maria and written by Monica Rametta, is slated for a special event release in cinemas on February 2, 3, and 4, 2026, presented by Nexo Studios.

A Journey From Sicily to Stardom

The film chronicles the formative years of Franco Battiato, tracing his path from his origins in Sicily to his arrival in Milan during the 1970s. It promises to illuminate the pivotal moments that shaped his ascent to success and his eventual return to his roots. Co-produced by Rai Fiction and Casta Diva Pictures, “Franco Battiato. The Long Journey” isn’t simply a musical biography; it’s presented as an exploration of an internal quest.

The Inner Life of a Musical Innovator

According to a company release, the film centers on Battiato’s “interior journey,” highlighting how his innate spirituality evolved into a deliberate and conscious search for meaning. This exploration is depicted through key relationships in his life. The film features Dario Aita in the role of the young Battiato, alongside Elena Radonicich as Fleur, Simona Malato as his mother, and Ermes Frattini portraying Juri Camisasca.

The narrative also emphasizes the importance of other significant figures, including Nicole Petrelli as Giuni Russo and Giulio Forges Davanzati as Giusto Pio, a crucial co-author of many of Battiato’s most iconic songs. “The film traces Franco Battiato’s evolution from radical experimentation to evenings with Giorgio Gaber and Ombretta Colli up to pop success,” the release states, “putting his true journey at the center: the search for the inner self.”

Music as Transcendence

“Franco Battiato. The Long Journey” positions music not merely as entertainment, but as a “language of a constant tension towards the transcendent.” The film suggests that Battiato’s work consistently sought to move beyond the confines of fame and celebrity, aiming for a deeper, more spiritual connection. The cast also includes Anna Castiglia and features a special appearance by Joan Thiele.

The film’s original score is composed by Vittorio Cosma, with contributions from Giuvazza Maggiore. Following its theatrical release, “Franco Battiato. The Long Journey” is scheduled to air on Rai 1, bringing the story of this influential artist to a wider audience.
