Rail transport: Newsweek highlights Morocco’s “ambitious” strategy

Washington – The American magazine Newsweek has highlighted Morocco’s “ambitious” strategy, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, for the modernization and expansion of its high-speed rail network, stressing that the Kingdom is establishing itself as an “African leader” in this sector.

The only African country to have a high-speed train (TGV) line, Morocco intends to consolidate and modernize its railway infrastructure, an ambition supported by His Majesty the King in order to accelerate economic development across the country and consolidate trade with the rest of the continent, notes the publication in an article signed by Flynn Nicholls.

The American media outlet recalls, in this sense, the speech that the Sovereign addressed to the Nation on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Green March, in which His Majesty the King emphasizes: “We also cherish the dream of building a railway line from Tangier to Lagouira, to connect Morocco to the rest of Africa. We pray that God helps us find the financial resources that we lack today in order to complete the Marrakech-Lagouira line.”

In its article, Newsweek looks back at the ambitions of the National Railways Office’s (ONCF) Rail Morocco 2040 Plan to connect major cities, modernize conventional rail services and boost Morocco’s economic development.

The ONCF also plans to extend the TGV to Marrakech by 2030, in anticipation of the football World Cup that Morocco will co-organize with Portugal and Spain, adds the same source.

For the prestigious American media, the high-speed rail line should promote new commercial opportunities and facilitate the movement of goods, consolidating Morocco’s position as a logistics hub between Europe and Africa.
