Mr. Kim (31), a male office worker in sales, bought black rain boots last month and is using them as work shoes. Due to the nature of his job, he always wears a suit and goes on business trips, but recently, with the rainy season continuing, he bought rain boots as a substitute for dress shoes. Mr. Kim said, “Rain boots and dress shoes have similar feelings, so I am satisfied with both the function and the aesthetics.”

Summer rainy season and hot weather alternate, and hot summer fashion items that transcend gender are gaining popularity. This is because both men and women, tired of summer weather, are choosing the same seasonal items, in addition to the genderless fashion trend that has been going on for several years. Sportswear that was mainly worn by men in the past is also gaining popularity among women, especially soccer.

Rain boots and parasols, which were considered to be exclusive to women, are considered representative genderless items in the summer. Samsung C&T Fashion Group’s Beanpole Accessories recently released the ‘Anywhere’ series consisting of rain boots and parasols targeting the 2030 generation. It is available in colors that can be worn by any gender, such as black, khaki, and beige.

According to Samsung C&T, the percentage of male purchases for both rain boots and umbrellas exceeded 20% of cumulative sales. A Samsung C&T official explained, “Since the launch, the percentage of male purchases in monthly sales has been increasing,” and “The perception that ‘there is no gender in summer weather’ is reflected in purchases.”

Sportswear is also gaining popularity as a fashion item that transcends gender. This is because the sports culture for both men and women has developed and the advantages of sportswear that have both functionality and design have been recognized.

In fact, sportswear brands have been releasing genderless sportswear products by collaborating with various brands early on. This year, Fila collaborated with streetwear brand ‘Aries’ to present ‘Fila X Aries’, a tennis wear-style collection that emphasizes genderless design. Reebok also released the ‘Club C 85’, a sports shoe themed after tennis court shoes and sneakers, in the second half of last year (July-December).

In addition, as the women’s futsal craze is blowing, soccer uniforms are also gaining popularity. According to the Korea Football Association, as of May this year, there were 3,855 female amateur soccer players registered with the association, a 20.9% increase from 3,190 in December 2019. As women’s overall interest in soccer increases, uniforms are also benefiting.

According to Musinsa, soccer uniform sales in the first half of this year (January to June) increased by 54% compared to the same period last year, and among them, the proportion of female consumers of the popular Daegu FC uniform reached 40%. A Musinsa official said, “With the female trend in the soccer world, soccer uniforms that have both functionality and design are gaining attention as a summer fashion item.”
