Rain leaves seven dead, six missing in South Korea

At least seven people have dead and six are missing due to flooding caused by the heaviest rains to hit Seoul in 80 yearsas reported by local authorities on Tuesday.

Parts of the South Korean capital, as well as the port city of Incheon and Gyeonggi province, have recorded heavy rains that have dumped more than 100 millimeters (mm) for several consecutive hours early Tuesday, the Yonhap news agency reported. Rainfall has even exceeded 140 millimeters (mm) in an hour in the Dongjak district of Seoul, which means the largest downpour recorded in 60 minutes since 1942.

In addition to the victims, the heavy rains have caused flooding in houses, vehicles, buildings and subway stations, according to the aforementioned agency. The floods have left five dead and another four missing in Seoul, while in the rest of Gyeonggi province, two people have lost their lives and two others are missing.
