Rains continue in Oman until January 5; People should not go out during floods

Muscat: Heavy rains have continued in Oman for the past two days. Authorities said they had rescued several people trapped in plaintiffs’ homes and homes in various governorates. Six people, including five members of a family, have been killed in heavy rains. The vehicle in which the family was traveling overturned in Samail Governorate and overturned into the Wadi Surur stream. The rescue operation is being led by the Oman Police.

The slopes and low-lying areas were inundated following heavy rains. Several vehicles were reportedly swept away in the water. The media also reported that people were trapped in several places due to the severe floods.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has warned of strong winds and thundershowers in various parts of the country over the next three days. Heavy showers are expected in Musantam, North Al Batina, South Al Batina, Muscat, Al Buraimi, Al Dahira, Al Dakhlia, South Al Sharqiyah and North Al Sharqiyah. Authorities warned people here to be careful. The Oman Meteorological Agency said heavy rains would continue until January 5.

The Civil Defense Department also urged the people not to cross the plains during rainy seasons or go for sightseeing in dangerously high places. The police said that those who do not follow the security warnings in this manner are in danger. Capt. Muneer bin Mohammed said that there was a high risk of vehicles going out of control and overturning into streams due to strong currents, and that despite repeated warnings, people were reluctant to comply.
