Rains in southern Libya and the African desert surprise experts

by times news cr

Unprecedented heavy rainfall in the Sahara Desert region of North Africa has astonished experts, who have described it as an “unprecedented event.”

The American expert in monitoring storms and hurricanes, Adam Lucio, who is famous in this field, wrote on his official page in astonishment, “It is raining in Africa!”

Lucio explained that the “tropical waves” are moving north of the region, in the opposite direction to their direction in the Atlantic Ocean, which has led to an unusually quiet hurricane season in the United States.

He added that the expected amounts of extreme rainfall in Africa at the present time are practically unprecedented, reaching 6 standard deviations above the normal rate.

According to Lucio, the likelihood of such an event occurring is “almost zero,” as it occurs only once every 1.4 million years.

In mid-August, the southern regions of Libya witnessed unprecedented heavy rains that caused floods to flow in several mountain valleys, flooding entire regions and displacing their people.

As a result of these floods, the municipal council in Tahala declared it a “disaster area” at the time, given that it was the area most affected by the floods, and called for providing all urgent assistance to the residents.

In addition, the National Center for Meteorology expects heavy rains to resume in the far southern regions of Libya over the next two days, warning of flooding valleys.
