Rainy Week Ahead in Sweden: Weather Warnings for Potential Flooding and High Flows

by time news

Large amounts of rain are expected across Sweden this week, with concerns of potential flooding and high flows. According to meteorologist Linus Karlsson, this week’s weather will consist of back-and-forth conditions, alternating between rain and temporary sunshine.

On Tuesday, torrential rain hit central Götaland and southern and southeastern Svealand. The heavy rain caused a sinkhole in Norrköping and led to several reports of flooding in basements and cars stuck in water.

The rain then moved up to northern Norrland on Wednesday, with localized areas expecting 25-30 millimeters of rain. Karlsson stated that there could be some thunderstorms in certain areas as well.

There will be a streak of rain over Öland and Gotland during the day, but on Thursday, the rain clouds will disperse, offering a sunny window that could last through Friday. However, the rain will return over the weekend as a new area of rain moves in. The sunniest areas during the weekend are expected to be in Norrland.

Karlsson advises keeping an umbrella handy, as unsettled weather will continue with alternating periods of sun and rain. Despite the rain, temperatures are expected to reach around 20 degrees Celsius once the sun comes out.

Due to recent rainfall, high flows in streams and lakes have been reported, leading to several weather warnings. A red warning for high flows is in place for Gavleån, Marnäsån, Kolningsån, and Delångersån. Additionally, orange flood warnings have been issued for over ten lakes and waterways, while yellow warnings for high flows are in effect in parts of Västernorrland, Dalarna, Gävleborg, Västmanland, and Uppsala counties.

It is essential to stay updated on the weather conditions and follow any instructions or warnings from local authorities to ensure safety during this period of unstable weather.
