Raleigh-area youth hockey teams are gearing up for national competition as the 2025-26 season nears its conclusion. Five teams—representing the Junior Canes and NC Golden Bears organizations—have earned berths in the 2026 Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships, a testament to the growing strength of the sport in the region. The teams will compete in tournaments across the country, from Modern York to California, seeking to claim national titles.

The Junior Canes will have a significant presence at the championships, sending three girls’ teams to Amherst, New York, from March 24-29, 2026. The Junior Canes 14U, 16U, and 19U Tier I teams will all vie for a championship in their respective divisions. Meanwhile, the NC Golden Bears 14U 2A team will travel to Dallas, Texas, for competition from March 25-29, 2026, and the Raleigh Raptors 14U 2A team will head west to Irvine, California, during the same timeframe. This level of representation underscores the increasing competitiveness and depth of youth hockey programs in the Research Triangle area.

Shane Willis, Director of Youth Hockey & Community Outreach for the Carolina Hurricanes, expressed pride in the accomplishments of the local teams. “We are so proud of all the organizations that have earned the honor to compete in these tournaments,” Willis said. “We wish them all luck and hope they all return to North Carolina with their ultimate prize.” The Hurricanes organization has invested heavily in youth hockey development, and this national representation is a clear indication of that investment paying off.

Junior Canes’ Historic Qualification

For the Junior Canes girls’ program, this year’s national championship appearances are particularly noteworthy. The organization only achieved Tier I status six years ago, and the qualification of both the 14U and 19U teams marks the first time in program history that both have advanced out of the Southeast District. Sarah Swingle, Hurricanes Girls’ & Women’s Hockey Specialist and coach of the Junior Canes 16U & 19U teams, highlighted the significance of this achievement.

“Our 16U team has only been Tier I for four seasons and has now qualified for Nationals three times, which is an incredible testament to the work these players and families have put in,” Swingle said. “This will also be the first time ever that both our 14U and 19U teams have advanced out of the Southeast District, making this moment even more special. There aren’t enough words for me to share how special this moment was for me, our girls, and our families.”

Swingle also emphasized the resilience and determination displayed by the teams, noting that both the 16U and 19U squads entered the district tournaments as underdogs, ultimately defeating higher-ranked opponents. “For our 16U and 19U teams, Here’s especially meaningful. Both teams entered districts as underdogs and defeated teams ranked ahead of them all season. The resilience, commitment, and belief these girls showed were incredible, and they are so deserving of this opportunity,” she explained. The Junior Canes’ 2008 birth year players will be competing in their third consecutive National Tournament, an accomplishment achieved by only a select few teams—approximately 16 out of 55-65 qualifying teams.

Raleigh Raptors Aim to Repeat Success

The Raleigh Raptors are entering the 2026 Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships with recent success on their minds. Last year, the team brought home gold in the Youth Tier II 18U Championships in Utica, New York. The 14U 2A team will seem to build on that legacy as they compete in Irvine, California. The team’s prior success demonstrates the potential for local teams to excel on the national stage.

The 2026 Chipotle-USA Hockey National Championships will feature a variety of age groups and skill levels, with tournaments held in locations across the country.
