“The best thing in life is when you have the right partner by your side with whom you can share everything,” wrote Ralf Schumacher on Instagram on July 14. The former Formula 1 driver also shared a romantic photo of the couple. With these words, the racing driver made his relationship with Étienne Bousquet-Cassagne, who is 15 years younger than him, public. He also celebrated his coming out with the post.
Ralf Schumacher has never been in a relationship with a man before. Quite the opposite. The 49-year-old was even married to a woman – Cora Schumacher. Since his coming out, however, there have been rumors that the marriage was staged. Others believe he was just deceiving his ex-wife. Ralf Schumacher has now commented on the speculation himself.
In an interview with “Bunte”, the former Formula 1 star denied having had a marriage that was just a pretense. “I was married to a woman I loved and with whom I have a wonderful son,” said Ralf Schumacher. “Do you think I would have lasted 14 years with one woman if our marriage had been a fake construct? Such unbelievable nonsense.”
In the double interview with his partner Étienne Bousquet-Cassagne, Schumacher described the rumors and questions about them as “so stupid” and that they “really annoyed him.” Cora Schumacher had accused him of not having been informed. She was surprised by her ex-husband’s coming out. “We neither cheated on her nor lied to her,” Étienne clarified.
In an RTL interview, the first excerpts of which have now been shown, Schumacher said at the time of this step: “I’ve been a bit concerned recently – because we’ve had a lot of guests here in the summer, we’re always out and about together – that it would come out at some point. I didn’t want to run after it, I wanted to stay up front and have a say in it myself.”
Although the couple had agreed on the announcement, the fact that he made the relationship public with a post at exactly that time was a surprise for Bousquet-Cassagne: “I told him five minutes later, please take a look,” Schumacher reported.
