Once after the death of someone I knew, we came back from the crematorium and as per the tradition, all the people present there had to take a bath before entering the house, but there was no water in the entire village for all of us to bathe, that day my entire family walked three kilometers in the scorching sun to another village for water. My entire childhood was spent struggling for water, so I know the importance of water.”
“Your water is so powerful, it can do wonders, the pitcher should not break, the husband should die.”
Ram Babu Tiwari is from an area where women compare a pot of water to their husbands. Ram Babu Tiwari of Adhawan, a small village in drought-affected Bundelkhand, spent his entire childhood struggling for water.
But after tenth standard, when he came to live in a city hostel for studies, he took a shower for the first time. Seeing the water being wasted in the shower in the city, he remembered his village. When he advised his friends to save water, his friends said that if you want to save water, go to the village and save it.
Then what happened was that Ram Babu started working in villages on his holidays and along with some friends from Bundelkhand region, he formed Pani Chaupal. Its purpose was to spread awareness about water. He started going from village to village and organizing Pani Chaupal. He started trying to connect people through Pani Chaupal. With time, he created such an environment that people started talking about the lakes and ponds around them. Started making them clean and safe.
Over time, he has made 5000 Jal Mitras in the entire Bundelkhand region. To create awareness, he did everything from religious programs to street plays, fed people with food and connected them to Shram Daan and in this way, after 10 years of hard work, he has succeeded in rebuilding 75 ponds in Bundelkhand.
Now rain water collects in these ponds which is used by the villagers throughout the year. In today’s times, the country needs a Water Hero like Ram Babu. I hope you will also agree with this.
