It is alleged that drugs worth crores are being smuggled from Vedalai beach near Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district to Sri Lanka and from Sri Lanka to Vedalai and Maraikayarpatnam villages.

Last week, 80 kg of methamphetamine, worth several crores, was brought in a car to be smuggled to Sri Lanka. Two people from Chennai were arrested in this connection. During the investigation conducted by the customs officials, it was revealed that the mandapam was being smuggled to Sri Lanka through the nearby Vedalai beach. Similarly, the mysterious powder which was smuggled by the DMK councilors last month was also smuggled through the same Vedala village. Apart from that, the investigation department seized the gold that was smuggled from Sri Lanka through Marakayarpatnam beach.

Also, the list of smuggled items such as ganja bundles, tons of turmeric, sea cards worth crores of rupees, paint, varnish, nail polish, beet leaves are being smuggled from Kerala to Sri Lanka.

In the investigation conducted with the smugglers, they said that all these smuggled goods were to be smuggled to Sri Lanka through Vedalai beach. As a result, Vedalai village has become the trafficking center of Ramanathapuram district and the police and investigation team have turned their attention towards Vedalai village and started actively monitoring Ramanathapuram Vedalai coastal area.
