New Zealand is appointing Herath mainly to get success against Asian countries. New Zealand will play six Test matches in South Asia. Herath will serve as New Zealand’s spin bowling coach for the first three.

New Zealand’s tour of South Asia will begin on Monday (September 9) with a Test against Afghanistan. After the Test against Afghanistan, the Kiwis will tour Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series. Both tests will be done.

Herath will work in the New Zealand team for these three Tests. Vikram Rathore will also be seen as a batting consultant. Having worked as a batting coach in the Indian team for a long time, his duty ended with the T20 World Cup recently.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead believes the team will benefit from having Herath and Rathore, “Both of them are regarded as very high quality coaches in world cricket and I know our boys are looking forward to learning from them.”

After the tour of Sri Lanka, New Zealand will play a three-match Test series in India. Except for the Test match against Afghanistan, all five Tests are part of the ICC Test Championship.
