However, for the first time in history, restrictions have been imposed on each team to play in just 3 league matches. Accordingly, there are 64 matches to be played in the 62-day Ranji Trophy. The first 57 league rounds are scheduled to take place. Elite Group League matches will be played in Chennai, Rajkot, Cuttack, Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Delhi and Haryana. The Blade Group competitions are to be held in Kolkata.
The teams participating in the league round for this cup are to be divided into 8 teams consisting of 4 teams each in the Elite Group division. The remaining 6 teams are to play in the Blade Group division. Overall many local Indian cricketers are happy as the Ranji Trophy is about to take place again.

Last Chance:
It is common for star players who normally play for the Indian team to regain their form by playing again in this Ranji Trophy when runs stumble due to poor form. Experienced players Ajinkya Rahane and Pujara, who are currently in poor form in the Indian team, are expected to play in the Ranji Trophy.
BCCI President Saurav Ganguly has hinted that Rahane and Pujara will get a chance in the Indian squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in March only if they play well in the series.
