Title: Rapid Increase in Smallpox Infections Raises Concern in Thailand

Date: 21 August 2023

A worrying situation has emerged in Thailand as the number of smallpox infections continues to rise rapidly in 19 provinces. Since the middle of 2023, health authorities have observed a surge in cases, particularly among individuals who engage in unsafe sexual practices, including those infected with HIV.

Smallpox is a sexually transmitted disease that can also be contracted through direct contact with pustules on the skin. The alarming increase in infections has sparked concerns regarding the constant risk of transmission, especially among HIV-infected individuals.

According to the Department of Disease Control, the rise in smallpox cases in Thailand began in July 2022, with the majority of initial infections reported among foreigners. However, the situation has since evolved, and currently, almost 100% of those affected are Thai men who have engaged in unsafe sexual activities or have had multiple partners. Alarmingly, nearly half of all new smallpox cases are also HIV-infected.

The Department of Disease Control, recognizing the severity of the situation, remains vigilant and actively working to address the outbreak. It is anticipated that there will be hundreds of new smallpox cases in August alone, highlighting the urgency to implement preventive measures and interventions swiftly.

Based on the Department of Disease Control’s information, there have been a total of 217 smallpox patients in Thailand from January 1 to August 15, 2023. Out of this number, 30 cases were foreigners, while the remaining 187 were Thai nationals. The average age of those infected ranges between 20-64 years old. The outbreak has predominantly affected Bangkok, metropolitan areas, and popular tourist provinces.

In a tragic turn of events, a 34-year-old Thai male became the first reported death due to smallpox in the country. The individual had untreated HIV infection, resulting in low immunity. Their condition progressively worsened, ultimately leading to their demise on the night of August 11, 2023.

The situation calls for increased awareness and immediate action to curb the spread of smallpox in Thailand. Health authorities are working tirelessly to implement prevention strategies, including education on safe sexual practices and access to vaccines. It is crucial for individuals to understand the risks and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.

The Department of Disease Control advises all residents, especially those engaging in risky behavior, to remain vigilant and prioritize their health. Regular testing, practicing safe sex, and seeking medical attention at the first sign of symptoms are critical measures in controlling the smallpox outbreak.]
