Unusual Bird Found in Stockholm Turns Heads of Bird Watchers

Stockholm, Sweden – An unexpected visitor caught the attention of bird watchers in Stockholm on Tuesday. The arrival of a brown sole, a bird not typically found in Europe but rather closer to the Red Sea, has sparked excitement and curiosity among onlookers.

The bird’s presence on a ferry that docked in Stockholm was a pleasant surprise for many. According to Didrik Vanhoenacker, an on-call biologist at the National Museum of Natural History, these seabirds are known for their ability to travel long distances in search of food. Therefore, it is not entirely surprising to see them in locations outside their usual habitat.

Didrik Vanhoenacker himself was fortunate enough to witness the bird’s journey. He revealed that it was first spotted in Finland when it landed on a coast guard boat near Helsinki. This was the first time the bird had ever been seen in Finland, and it had only been observed once before in Sweden.

While on the ferry bound for Stockholm, the bird decided to rest instead of continue flying due to unfavorable weather conditions. Its exhaustion and thin appearance led to its rescue and transfer to an animal rehabilitation center in Stockholm. Vanhoenacker stated that the bird did not appear to be injured but needed nourishment to recover.

The sighting of the brown sole in Sweden is a rare occurrence. According to Vanhoenacker, the bird’s first appearance in the country was noted in early November 2021.

Bird enthusiasts and researchers are eagerly awaiting updates on the bird’s condition and hoping for its successful rehabilitation. The unexpected visit of this unique bird highlights the wonders of nature and the thrill of unexpected encounters in the animal kingdom.
