Rare Blue Supermoon Shines Bright for Stargazers

Stargazers were treated to a stunning celestial event on Wednesday night as a rare blue supermoon lit up the sky. This supermoon, which is the closest full moon of the year, was the second full moon of August, earning it the “blue” label. However, despite its name, the moon did not actually appear blue.

In addition to the blue supermoon, stargazers were also able to catch a glimpse of Saturn, which could be seen alongside the moon in areas where the skies were clear. This weekend will present another unique viewing opportunity as Saturn reaches its closest point to Earth while directly opposite the Sun, making it appear large and bright.

The last blue supermoon occurred on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, and the next one is not expected until 2037. The moon appeared particularly close to Earth this time around, at just 222,043 miles away, resulting in a larger and brighter appearance compared to the previous supermoon on August 1, which was over 100 miles farther away.

Although the term “blue moon” is often used to describe a rare occurrence, it simply refers to the occurrence of a second full moon within a calendar month. The moon does not actually appear blue under normal circumstances. However, NASA explains that on rare occasions, tiny particles floating in the Earth’s atmosphere can cause the moon to appear blue.

From Sydney, Australia, to New York City, stargazers around the world were able to witness this magnificent event. The Blue Supermoon provided a magical spectacle for people of all ages to enjoy.
