However, the case of the 15-year-old suggests that vocal cord paralysis could be an additional neuropathic sequela of the virus. This complication has been observed in adults following a COVID diagnosis, but it has not been detected in people as young as this patient.
The researchers emphasize the importance of considering vocal cord pathology in children with voice, swallowing, or breathing difficulties after a SARS-CoV-2 infection. They urge healthcare professionals to consider vocal cord issues as a possible complication post-COVID, especially when young patients experience such symptoms after a coronavirus illness.
The symptoms the 15-year-old girl experienced after her COVID-19 infection included constipation, fever, and fatigue. Despite testing negative for COVID-19 after her initial positive test, she continued to experience worsening respiratory symptoms, leading to her hospitalization.
After a lengthy diagnosis process and numerous tests to rule out other causes, the patient was dependent on a tracheostomy for 13 months.
