Two-dollar bills are highly sought after in the numismatic market. Having one in hand is rare, but two with consecutive serial numbers is a magnet for collectors. Find out how much they offered for a pair from 2017 that was auctioned in 2022.
Although it is difficult to have one in hand, the two-dollar bill (US$2) is a current denomination of U.S. currency and, according to the website U.S. Currency Auctions (USCA), some of these bills are worth anywhere from a few dollars to thousands.
THE 2017 TWO-DOLLAR BILLS WITH SPECIAL SERIAL NUMBER
Collectible banknote and coin specialist Daniel Martel discussed in detail through a YouTube video about two two-dollar bills from 2017 that have a higher value than their face value because they have a consecutive serial number.
He then showed the two-dollar bills with the consecutive series: one had the series E 01699999 A and the other E 17000000 A, which, although not old, makes them valuable as they greatly exceed their face value.
Martel explained that the two bills were uncertified but in perfect condition. Therefore, in March 2022, the pair was sold at auction for US$144.

The Rising Value of $2 Bills in Numismatics
The humble $2 bill, often overlooked in daily transactions, is becoming a sought-after item among collectors and numismatists. The rarity of these bills, especially in the context of consecutive serial numbers, is driving interest and prices higher.
Increased Collector Demand
In the world of numismatics, specific attributes can drastically increase a bill’s value. For instance, a pair of $2 bills from 2017 – one with the serial number E 01699999 A and the other E 17000000 A – recently sold for $144, demonstrating how collectors are willing to pay a premium for unique pieces. As more enthusiasts enter the market and seek to complete their collections, the demand for these rare bills could rise, potentially increasing their market value even further.
The Allure of Unique Features
Collectors and investors are keenly interested in bills that feature distinctive characteristics, such as low serial numbers or unique patterns. The ongoing trend of people looking to diversify their investment portfolios is likely to lead to an uptick in value for specialized currency like the $2 bill, especially if more collectors become aware of their potential worth.
Educational Influence on Market Trends
With educational platforms and social media channels actively discussing the value of certain bills, including the $2 note, awareness will likely fuel interest. Influencers and experts, like Daniel Martel, are already showcasing their finds on platforms such as YouTube, drawing in a new audience to this fascinating realm of currency collecting.
Preservation and Authentication Efforts
As the market for collector currency expands, so too will the efforts to preserve and authenticate these bills. The significance of condition and certification will become more pronounced, leading collectors to seek better preservation methods for their prized possessions. Investing in professional grading services may become more commonplace as collectors aim to distinguish their collections.
Future of $2 Bills in Circulation
Currently, there are approximately 1.2 billion $2 bills in circulation, amounting to $2.4 billion in nominal value. However, if the trend of collection continues, it could lead to a potential decrease in their availability in circulation, as more individuals will choose to keep these bills as collectibles rather than use them in transactions. This dynamic could further impact their value and allure in the marketplace.
