TV actress Rashmi Desai’s journey started from Gorakhpur, she stayed in Lucknow and her journey reached its destination after coming to Mumbai. She did not want to become an actress, but the responsibility that came on her shoulders after her father’s death taught her to struggle. Read the actress’s exclusive conversation with Navbharat Times.
Rashmi Gupta has made a name for herself in the TV industry. There are three important stages of her journey, in which Lucknow is a stop between Gorakhpur (birthplace) and Mumbai (workplace). This city has educated her and taught her to be honest towards responsibilities. After TV serials ‘Guddan Tumse Na Ho Payega’, ‘Saath Nibhaana Saathiya-2’, now she is playing an important role in the show ‘Dhruv Tara’. She spoke openly about her moments spent in Lucknow, career, acting, struggle and social media.
Responsibilities on the shoulders, the artist inside recognized in Mumbai
After my father’s death, the responsibility of the house fell on me. I came to Lucknow, studied here and then worked. One day I came to Mumbai and thought of trying acting. Believe me, I did not even know the A of acting and never did it. I believe that acting is in you from birth, you just have to recognize it. I recognized the artist inside me after coming to Mumbai.
I need money, this is regret
When I started giving auditions, I felt that this was the right place. If there were no responsibilities, I would have probably been doing a big or lead role. However, due to responsibilities and the need for money, I did whatever role I got. The rule of the industry is that whatever character you do first, you get the same again and again. I was also offered many negative lead roles. I feel that I should have waited a little for the lead. But there was no time to wait. Well, now everything is going well, hopefully it will be even better soon.
Does not support influencers
As an artist, it is not wrong to be called an influencer in today’s terms, but I do not support influencers at all. We artists work hard day and night, we act, we do not just lip-sync and get likes. If those who are making reels today, lip-syncing to songs, are made to stand in front of the camera, they will not be able to act. Many shows in which influencers were given a chance, they also flopped. The producers and channel people do not understand this. They think that if they have popularity, then take them. They are non-actors. They do not know how to act. They do not know how to speak dialogues.

Have to be active on social media
Nowadays, due to reels girls and new influencers, even artists have to be active on social media. If they don’t do this, they will suffer losses. I myself am active on social media, but I don’t flaunt my body, in fact I can’t do it. I read Shayari or my own writings and my original voice gets millions of views. Still, I don’t like being called an influencer.
The character is like my real life
I have played main negative characters before, but my character named Chandra in ‘Dhruv Tara’ is completely different from the rest. I feel Chandra is exactly like me. She is exactly like me in real life, so I am excited that for the first time I am presenting myself as a character on screen. The plot of this story is in the 18th century, so we have to speak pure Hindi. Nowadays we speak a mixed language. So while playing this character, I read the script two to three times, so that I could pronounce those words correctly. Otherwise, in other shows, I used to read the script only once and get ready.
I feel very at home in Lucknow. I still remember the moments spent in the city

I remember Lucknow’s Ambedkar Park
When I came to Lucknow from Gorakhpur, I studied at Deen Dayal School here. I also started teaching at a school in Hazratganj. Then I used to do day care from afternoon till evening. After this I used to go to Patrakarpuram to prepare for bank competition. After getting free from there, I used to sit in Ambedkar Park located at 1090 intersection. I used to sit there and talk with friends, or say I used to give time to myself. There was a Parag booth in front of it, where we used to go to eat. After living in Lucknow for about five years, it did not feel like I am a guest of this city. It feels very much like home. Even today I remember the moments spent in the city.
