A lorry carrying cashew nuts worth Rs 1.10 crore was seized from Thoothukudi near Rasipuram. Seven people have been arrested, including Jebasinghe, the son of former AIADMK labor minister Sellapandian.
Driver Hari was driving a lorry towards the port of Thoothukudi carrying a load of cashew nuts worth Rs 1.10 crore weighing 12 tonnes from a privately owned cashew plant in Thakkalai area of Kanyakumari district. At that time, unidentified persons near Pudukottai in Thoothukudi district hijacked the lorry with a knife.
The driver then informed his manager Harikaran, who rushed to the spot and lodged a complaint at the Pudukottai police station. More than 10 policemen led by Thoothukudi ASP Sandheeskumar were actively searching for the lorry following the complaint. At this point, the mysterious gang removed the GPS device from the truck and drove away.
Privates know that the hijacked lorry was heading towards Namakkal from Thoothukudi. The kidnapping gang then found the lorry being chased by the police and fled after stopping the lorry in the hilly area next to Rasipuram in Namakkal district.
Police have arrested seven people, including Jebasingh, Vishnukumar, Manokaran, Marimuthu Rajkumar, Senthilkumar and Pandi, the son of former Labor Minister Sella Pandyan, who were involved in the abduction when police interrogated the occupants of a car parked on the road in the Thimmanayakanpatti area of Namakkal district.
