The Vegas Golden Knights have significantly bolstered their defensive corps, acquiring sought-after defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames. The deal, finalized Sunday afternoon, addresses a critical need for the Golden Knights following an injury to Alex Pietrangelo earlier in the season.
The Golden Knights reportedly sent defenseman Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, a first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft (protected within the top-10 selections), and a second-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft to Calgary in exchange for Andersson. Should Vegas win the Stanley Cup, the 2028 second-round pick will be upgraded to a first-round selection.
Addressing a Defensive Void in Vegas
The acquisition of Andersson comes at a crucial time for the Golden Knights, who were left vulnerable on the blue line after losing Pietrangelo. The team has been actively seeking a top-four defenseman to stabilize their defensive pairings and contribute to both even-strength and special teams play.
“The Golden Knights needed help on the blue line, and they found their man,” a senior hockey analyst stated.
Andersson’s Proven Track Record
Andersson, 29, brings a wealth of experience and offensive capabilities to Vegas. Throughout his 584-game NHL career, all spent with the Flames, he has amassed 57 goals and 261 points. This season alone, he has 10 goals and 30 points in 48 games, demonstrating a resurgence in offensive production after recording 31 points in 81 games last season.
The right-handed defenseman is a versatile player, seeing time on both the power play – where he has recorded 10 points this season – and the penalty kill in Calgary. He was a consistent presence on the Flames’ first power-play unit.
Flames Retain Salary, No Extension Signed
As part of the trade, the Flames will retain 50% of Andersson’s $4.55 million annual average salary. Importantly, no contract extension has been signed between Andersson and the Golden Knights, meaning he is currently slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-2026 season.
A Fond Farewell to Calgary
Andersson appeared to acknowledge the Calgary fanbase during what may have been his final game with the Flames on Saturday, following a 4-2 victory over their opponents. He took a moment to appreciate the applause from the Saddledome crowd, suggesting a respectful and amicable departure.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft by Calgary, Andersson has spent his entire professional career with the organization. He was considered one of the most in-demand players leading up to the trade deadline, with the Boston Bruins also reportedly expressing strong interest.
The trade represents a significant move for both franchises, as the Golden Knights aim to contend for another Stanley Cup and the Flames begin to retool their roster with the incoming assets.
