How to properly use the read receipt in Signal

The Signal Messenger read receipt does not always work correctly and is subject to some conditions. We show what’s behind it.

Signal is suitable not only for chatting with individuals, but also for conversations in a group. The app attaches particular importance to the privacy of its users. Conversations are therefore completely encrypted.

Similar to other messengers, the read receipt in the Signal app ensures that you can see whether recipients have read your messages. However, this only works if you and the other person activate the read receipt in the settings. To change this setting, do the following:

The Signal app displays a read receipt in the chat history using two filled circles with ticks. These only appear if the feature is active for both users involved in the conversation at the time the message is sent. To find out the time the other person saw your message, hold your finger on the message in chat and select “Info.”

If you activate the read receipt in Signal later – i.e. after sending a message – the app will only show you a confirmation of receipt. In this case you will also see two circles with ticks on the message, but these are not filled.

If you do not receive a read receipt in a chat even though you have activated the corresponding function, there are various possible reasons:

Contact the recipient of your messages by other means to determine the actual cause and resolve it.
