Finding cheap houses in Frankfurt and the surrounding area is difficult – but not impossible if you know the conditions in the surrounding area.

Anyone who wants to buy a cheap house in the Rhine-Main area should have a lucky hand – and be familiar with the specifics of the communities. Because many are now ready to commute more.

Dhat will probably be a short text, colleagues scoffed at the plan to write about buying cheaper houses in the Rhine-Main area. Probably possible. Frankfurt is the fifth largest German city after Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne. As in the other metropolises, real estate prices on the Main have soared in the past ten years. This was due to the high level of immigration, but also to the scarce supply of new living space. For some years now, there has also been the phenomenon that houses are also becoming more and more expensive in the surrounding area. This could initially be interpreted as a reaction to the growing price differences between town and country. This movement was intensified by the pandemic and the new importance of the home office, which made more living space at comparatively lower prices more attractive.

So is the search for bargains around Frankfurt hopeless? Boris Schröder, managing director of the real estate agent Adler Immobilien active in the Rhine-Main area, has few illusions. “I can’t give you any bargain locations,” he says. “There is not a single place around Frankfurt in which house prices have not risen sustainably in recent years.” In addition, the supply has become scarce, so fewer single-family houses than before are on the market. Many elderly couples who used to sell their homes and look for a smaller apartment shied away from doing so. They wondered what to do with the money given the low interest rates – an important reason for the persistent excess demand in the housing market.
