Kyiv: The eleven-year-old had only a bag containing his passport and his mother’s letter and phone number when he left the Ukrainian city surrounded by Russian troops. He traveled alone that night without his parents, relatives or friends. Fleeing from a battlefield that smells of death to a neighboring country. The teenager was taken into custody by security officials, who described him as ‘the greatest hero’ ever. His smile, fearlessness and determination amazed them.
Parents living in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia are unable to leave their sick relatives. Fearing that the war would endanger the child’s life, the mother sent him by letter and phone to relatives in Slovakia.
When the boy arrived in Slovakia, border officials contacted relatives in the capital, Bratislava, and sent him away. The Slovakian Interior Ministry also posted on social media praising the bravery of the lone child.
