Real Madrid agreed a club-record fee of €135m (£115.7m) with RB Leipzig on Wednesday to sign 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande. The total package of €135m eclipses the fee Real Madrid paid Borussia Dortmund in 2023 for Jude Bellingham, which was believed to be worth up to €134m including add-ons. Diomande, who starred for Côte d’Ivoire at the World Cup, is expected to sign a contract that runs until 2031.
This move sets a new financial benchmark for African talent. The fee surpasses the £72m Arsenal spent on Nicolas Pépé in 2019, establishing Diomande as the most expensive African player in football history. The teenager’s rise has been rapid; after joining RB Leipzig from Leganés last summer, he was pictured arriving at the German side’s pre-season training camp in Austria on Wednesday.
