Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Arsenal are closely monitoring Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah ahead of potential summer moves. The 23-year-old England international joined the Bundesliga club from Liverpool in 2025 for £30 million, and his rapid development has triggered intense competition across Europe alongside Liverpool’s active buyback option.
European football heavyweights have turned their attention toward the BayArena as transfer interest mounts around Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah. The 23-year-old center-back, who also features at right-back for club and country, has established himself as a prominent figure in the Bundesliga and a regular in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad since his departure from Merseyside following a £30 million move in July 2025.
Real Madrid and Chelsea Join Arsenal in Pursuing Quansah
Real Madrid have registered great interest
in the English defender as part of ongoing plans to reinforce a backline that has experienced defensive vulnerabilities under manager José Mourinho. Scouted closely by the Spanish giants, Quansah is noted for his close friendship with Jude Bellingham, a dynamic that could potentially factor into future negotiations according to reports from German media.
At the same time, Chelsea have taken concrete steps by holding discussions to gauge the defender’s availability. Blues manager Xabi Alonso—who famously led Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title—is leading the charge to secure defensive reinforcements at Stamford Bridge amid a difficult start to the Premier League season.

The race also includes Arsenal, who previously attempted to secure the player’s signature with a €65 million (£55.5 million) official bid during the summer. Although Leverkusen firmly rejected that offer and opted to keep the player under contract until 2030, the Gunners continue to keep close tabs on his situation alongside Manchester United.
Liverpool Retains €70 Million Buyback Advantage
While rival clubs circle, Liverpool occupy a unique strategic position regarding their former academy product. When the Reds sold Quansah to the German club for an initial fee of £30 million (€35 million), they negotiated a buyback clause set at €70 million (£60 million) that becomes active in June 2027.
German reports describe the prospect of Leverkusen retaining the defender beyond the summer of 2027 as highly unrealistic
due to the scale of incoming bids and the existence of the buyback clause. Analysts suggest Liverpool could exercise the option either to bring the center-back back to Anfield or to trigger the clause simply to sell him onward for a significant profit.
Quansah Offers Tactical Flexibility for Club and Country
Quansah’s appeal across Europe stems from his tactical adaptability. While developed primarily as a central defender, he has increasingly featured on the right side of the backline for both club and country.
“We needed Jarell Quansah’s speed and ability to think as a central defender. He was top class at the World Cup, he was top class in training this week. He was excellent in this game.”
Thomas Tuchel, England Manager
That flexibility has allowed him to accumulate 49 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen since arriving from Merseyside.

“It was a really tough decision, to be honest, to walk away from my boyhood club – a club I’ve been at all my life,”
Jarell Quansah, Bayer Leverkusen Defender
Quansah further told reporters ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign that he knew it was the best thing for his career to be playing week in, week out.
With four years remaining on his contract at the BayArena, negotiations over his long-term future are expected to intensify as the January transfer window approaches and the 2027 buyback activation date draws nearer.
