FIFA has announced a number of important decisions regarding the Intercontinental Cup for Clubs, which will be held under a new system that includes stand-alone competitions that include confrontations between the champions of the six continental confederations.
The 2024 edition of the Club World Cup is scheduled to start on September 22 and end on December 18, with five matches to be played, with the first two matches to be played in the two teams’ home countries, while the remaining three will be played in Qatar.
From the 2024 edition, more than one team in each edition will have the opportunity to play at home for the first time in a FIFA competition, with the host team determined based on club rankings, with each of the first two matches being played at the home ground of the highest-ranked of the two competing clubs, allowing more fans to see their clubs compete in a FIFA tournament than ever before.
The first match will bring together Al Ain, the winner of the 2023-2024 AFC Champions League, and Auckland City, the winner of the 2024 OFC Champions League, with the match to be held in Al Ain, UAE, on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
The second match will be the stage for crowning the first prizes of the competition. The winner of the knockout match for the (Africa – Asia – Pacific) region will meet the Egyptian club Al-Ahly, crowned champion of the 2023-2024 African Champions League. The match will take place in Cairo on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, with the victorious team being crowned champion of the Africa – Asia – Pacific Cup.
The third match, officially called the Derby of the Americas, will be played on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, between Pachuca, the winner of the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League, and this year’s South American champion, whose identity will be determined on November 30, 2024, the date of the Copa Libertadores final.
On Saturday, December 14, 2024, the winners of the second and third matches will compete for the Challenge Cup (match 4) and a place in the 2024 Intercontinental Cup final (match 5), where they will face Real Madrid, the winner of the 2023-2024 UEFA Champions League, on Wednesday, December 18.
