Real Madrid regains its leadership as the club with the highest income in the world, according to the ranking prepared each year by the consulting firm Deloitte. The white team beat the petrodollars in the 2022-2023 season, closing it with ordinary income of 831.4 million euros, 17% more than the previous year and a record for the entity. With that figure, he once again leads the Football Money League report table, something he has not achieved since the 2017-2018 season. It is the team that has achieved it the most times, with 13, in the 27 editions that have been published.
This contains some important records. Never has a team led this classification with more than 800 million euros in turnover. A figure that, now, up to four teams have managed to surpass. Real Madrid’s pursuer is none other than Manchester City, which has led the income ranking in the last two years. The English team, owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, reached almost 826 million euros, 13% more, in the season in which it was finally crowned champion of the Champions League.
The podium is completed by the French Paris Saint-Germain, another team controlled by petrodollars, in this case Qatari. The club now coached by Luis Enrique reaches its highest position in the ranking, with revenues of 802 million, almost 23% more. FC Barcelona recovers positions and climbs to fourth position, reaching 800 million euros, although these higher incomes have not yet translated into a better financial situation for the club.
Therefore, the two big Spanish clubs fight with petrodollars for global leadership of the football industry. These four teams, the four that have a turnover of more than 800 million, agree on generating half of that amount through their commercial and sponsorship agreements. All of them are around 400 million, with Barcelona leading this section, with 412 million, in the first year of alliance with Spotify. Real Madrid generates 403, City 399 and PSG, 400.
The ability of these two teams to generate large commercial contracts, despite having a social reach much lower than the two large Spanish teams, is always on the table as it could represent a covert injection of funds by their owners.
Manchester City’s main sponsor is Etihad Airlines, the airline from Abu Dhabi. It also has Etisalat, the emirate’s telecommunications company; and Experience Abu Dhabi, its tourism department. PSG is sponsored by Qatar Airways. Both are owned by the Qatari government.
The ranking for the 2022-2023 season also shows the recovery of football income after the pandemic. The top 20 totaled a record of 10.5 billion, 15% more than the previous season, thanks to the boost from commercial and stadium revenues, which exceed audiovisual revenues. The English, as usual, are the ones with the most presence, with eight. Of them, six are in the top 10.
The Spanish representation is completed with Atlético de Madrid, although unlike Madrid and Barcelona, they give up positions. Specifically, it falls three positions after reducing its turnover by 8%, to 364.1 million. In his case, he was penalized by early elimination from the Champions League, by not passing the first phase.
Barcelona, leader in revenue in women’s football
Record. FC Barcelona continues to lead the classification in terms of income generation in women’s football. The Deloitte report estimates turnover last season at 13.4 million, 74% more than the previous one. During it, the culé entity emerged as winner of the Champions League and also the Spanish league. 63% of revenue is generated by sponsorship deals. In the cases of the jersey, the sponsor and technical supplier contracts are negotiated separately from the men’s team. The second European club that gets the most financial benefit from its women’s team is Manchester United, with eight million euros, while Real Madrid rises dramatically. From the 1.4 million in the 2021-2022 season, it goes to 7.4, becoming the third team in the ranking.
