China has created a secret stockpile of scarce minerals and food products in case Donald Trump wins the upcoming US elections. This is reported by The Economist, citing its own research, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
In 2023, China set a record for imports of key resources, exceeding the usual figures by 16 percent. In 2024, the growth did not stop, with imports increasing by another six percent.
In terms of imports, Beijing’s most dependent commodities are energy, minerals (bauxite and cobalt), and food products. By stocking up on these types of goods, the country has decided to prepare for a possible deterioration in trade relations with the United States that would occur if Trump is re-elected.
“China’s ‘secret reserves’ have not yet reached the scale necessary to ensure security in the event of a military conflict,” the publication emphasized, adding that at the same time, by the end of this year, China’s wheat and corn reserves will equal 51 and 67 percent of world reserves.
