A recent Australian study concluded that vitamin D deficiency can cause premature death. It was also found that vitamin D is beneficial for bone and muscle health, and that it is an important nutrient that helps us maintain good health in general.

“Although severe vitamin D deficiency is rarer in Australia than anywhere else in the world, it still affects those who suffer from health problems, such as the elderly and those who are not exposed to enough sun,” said the author of the study. “Our study provides strong evidence of a link between low levels of vitamin D and mortality, and is the first study of its kind to also include deaths related to respiratory diseases as a result,” he added.

Vitamin D reserves in the blood are measured by 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D is the main form found in the blood and is also called calcidiol.

The researchers looked at data from 307,601 people from UK biobank records. During a follow-up period of 14 years, it was found that the risk of dying decreased significantly as the concentrations of vitamin D increased in the human body, and in contrast, the strongest negative effects were recorded in those with a severe deficiency of the vitamin.
