Currently, among scientists, there is no clearly formed general opinion about the causes of the development of multiple sclerosis. It is believed that these causes may include not only genetic factors, but also environmental and lifestyle factors.

1. Genetics

Multiple sclerosis is not a genetic disease, but the chance of developing it increases if relatives have multiple sclerosis. For example, if 2 parents have multiple sclerosis, the probability of the disease in the child increases greatly. Currently, there are a number of genetic markers of the disease, but they also do not provide complete predictions of whether or not an individual will develop multiple sclerosis.

Certain ethnicities have been found to be more prone to have multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is more common in Europeans and northerners. The latter, as a rule, is associated with vitamin D deficiency.

2. External environmental factors

Possible reasons for the development of multiple sclerosis include poor ecology, exposure to toxins (for example, household chemicals), high radiation background.

A number of viruses, such as the herpes virus and the Ebstein-Barr virus, also play a role in the development of multiple sclerosis, but there is no clear evidence yet.

3. Lifestyle

Smoking, alcohol, stress, mental tension, extensive trauma and surgery are also risk factors for the development of the disease.

However, the reasons for the development of multiple sclerosis are not completely clear, because an individual with a genetic predisposition to the disease may not have any signs of the disease throughout life. But the combination of the factors described above significantly increases the risk of developing multiple sclerosis and can aggravate its course.
