Shannen Doherty fought breast cancer for almost ten years. The actress recently appeared hopeful, but also anxious, on Instagram.
In March 2015, Shannen Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer. Five months later, the public also learned about her illness. From then on, the “Beverly Hills, 90210” icon let her fans share in her battle against the insidious disease, especially to encourage other sufferers.
She gave interviews, posted on Instagram and launched her own podcast in November 2023. The actress released a new episode once a week. The 53-year-old usually had a guest. In the episode on June 24, however, only Shannen Doherty could be heard. In this edition, she gave her followers an update on her health.
“I’m not in a good mood,” she said right at the start. “I feel sorry for myself, that’s not acceptable and I know it.” She then told her fans that she had to undergo chemotherapy again. “The thought of going through it all again is killing me.”
She doesn’t know whether the chemo will last three or six months. “I can’t predict that. My doctors can’t predict that either. And it’s scary,” said the series star. “It’s a big wake-up call. But at the same time, there’s something positive about it.”
“The positive thing is that the molecular structure of my cancer cells has recently changed.” This means she has more treatment options. “I feel hopeful for the first time in months,” says the actress. “Before, I was full of hope, but I still prepared myself for it.” This time it is different.
In the episode, she thought about her future. “I need a vacation. I want to go on a boat, I want to discover new places.” She also said: “I want to be with my family as long as I can.” Shannen Doherty also published a short excerpt from the podcast episode on Instagram. After that, things went quiet for the actress.
Fans waited for an update. In vain. Not even three weeks later, Shannen Doherty died. Her long-time press secretary Leslie Sloane told People magazine. “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the death of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after battling the disease for many years.” Shannen Doherty was 53 years old.
