The arrival of the Olympic Flame in Ioannina on April 24 was at the center of the meeting of the mayor of Ioannina, Thomas Bega, with the consul general of France in Thessaloniki, Jean-Luc Lavaud and his colleagues, in which the honorary consul of France in Ioannina, Dora Ziambiri, also participated.
Paris is the host of the Olympic Games this summer and Ioannina will be one of the Greek stops on the journey of the Olympic Flame, before it reaches the French capital. In this context, the details of the organization of various events, which the French side wishes to hold in Ioannina, as well as the overall preparation of this important event, were discussed.
At the same time, on behalf of the municipality of Ioannito, questions concerning city diplomacy were raised and the possibilities of twinning our municipality with cities in France were discussed. Finally, it was agreed to cooperate on cultural issues which will be specified in the next meeting.
“It is our great pleasure and honor to host the Olympic Flame in Ioannina on its journey to Paris. We had a very good cooperation with the Consul General of France in Thessaloniki and his associates, as well as the Honorary Consul of France in Ioannina, and I am sure that we will cooperate perfectly for the reception of the flame. I am sure that the same will happen in the other fields, which we discussed and which concern both city diplomacy and cultural exchanges”, said Mr. Begas after the end of the meeting.
Meeting with the governor
Similar was the content of the meeting of Mr. Jean-Luk Lavaud with the regional governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis. In addition to the events for the Olympic Flame, more general issues of common interest were discussed, with an emphasis on the tourism and agri-food sectors, with the regional governor, Alexandros Kahrimanis, underlining the very close relations between Greece and France, at the same time pointing out the increasing trend, which is visible for tourist visits from France to various regions of Epirus.
