NEW DELHI: There is a need to increase the depth of all ports in the country to handle very large cargo ships, a Parliamentary Standing Committee has opined.

A report filed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Union Ministry of Transport, Tourism and Culture states:

In most of the ports in the country, the depth of berth for cargo ships is very low. The old harbors have a depth of 23 feet and the new harbors only 66 feet.

Under the central government’s Sagarmala scheme, modernization of ports is underway. Under this scheme, there is a need to increase the depth of all the ports in the country.

Only then can future problems in handling very large cargo ships be safeguarded.

It says so.
