Time.news – A hat of Napoleon I, the famous black bicorn with his blue, white and red cockade, was sold in Fontainebleau, outside Paris, for 1.932 million euros (commissions included) in an auction that greatly exceeded the estimates of the Osènat auction house.

The identity and nationality of the buyer were not disclosed. This sale attracted “collectors from all over the world” and aroused great enthusiasm, announced the auction house which broke its own record: in 2014, he sold a Napoleon hat for 1.884 million euros.

The auction coincides with the upcoming release of a blockbuster film about Napoleon with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. According to experts, over the course of fifteen years, Napoleon wore about 120 of these hats and that is why they appear at auction from time to time. “The hat alone represents the image of the emperor”, declared the director of the auction Jean-Pierre Osènat a month ago.
