Record of 930,000 passengers during Ramadan 2023 on the high-speed Mecca-Medina

The high-speed train between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia, has exceeded its record during the Ramadan space plan, between March 23 and April 25, 2023. This year it has increased, both the number of commercial services operated as passenger.

The 2023 Ramadan special plan services of Haramain Train have registered more than 930,000 passengers traveling on 2,875 trains this year. All of them arrived at their destination with an average punctuality of 96.9 percent, during this period, which included the month of Ramadan and subsequent holidays.

These figures have broken the all-time highs for the line, both in volume of daily and monthly passengers.

The highest passenger rate in a day since commercial services began in October 2018 on this line was on Friday, April 14. On that day, which is a holiday in Saudi Arabia, 37,355 people traveled on 115 trains, which were 100 percent punctual.

Regarding the monthly data, the record was reached in March 2023 with 620,259 passengers, 2,296 trains and an average punctuality of 98%. This upward trend was highlighted during the first days of Ramadan, between March 23 and 31, when 191,941 travelers were received on those dates.

Plan especial

The objective of the special service plan for Ramadan is to meet the specific mobility needs of both residents and the thousands of pilgrims who come to the two holy cities of Islam on these dates. Although the month of Ramadan ended on April 20, the reinforcements have been extended until the 25th, to include the celebration of Eid al Fitr (end of fasting) and subsequent holidays.

On these dates, a commercial offer of more than 1 million seats was launched, with schedules that exceeded one hundred daily services between the cities of Mecca and Medina during the periods of maximum expected demand.

One of the novelties has been the recovery of night services to meet the mobility needs of travelers after iftar, the daily breaking of the fast during the month of Ramadan. During the days of maximum demand, trains were scheduled until 5:30 in the morning and the opening hours of the five stations on the line were extended to 24 hours: Mecca, Medina, Central Jeddah, Jeddah Airport (KAIA ) and KAEC (King Abdullah Economic City.
