“With 21,000 visitors in one day, we broke all records of paying visitors to the archaeological area of Pompeii: I was right on the site two days ago, at the Casa dei Vettii; and I never imagined seeing so many people. This means that we are working hard and that we are going in the right direction”. The superintendent of Pompeii, the German archaeologist Gabriel Zuchtriegel, expresses all his satisfaction, interviewed by time.news the day after the presentation inside the Amphitheater – in the presence of the ministers of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida and of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Edmondo Cirielli – of the logo that will accompany the candidacy of ‘Italian Cuisine’ for recognition of intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

“We are trying to channel tourist flows and invest many resources in the use of the site – underlines Zuchtriegel – with the aim of opening new ‘domus’ and new routes in Pompeii. But this urges us to do even more, because if the number of visitors continues to increase, we must offer people an always unique experience: Pompeii must never be understood as a destination for mass tourism experienced as such, but as an ever-changing visit, an experience that is always unique every time you come to visit it”.

Zuchtriegel then observes that “the subject of maintenance and restoration in progress remains ever present. We have many projects, some already executive, others planned. Then, we are also very attentive to issues related to site safety: today we can no longer think, how it was instead fifty years ago, to open indiscriminately. We have protocols to follow on the physical presence of people who welcome and supervise, as well as a state-of-the-art video surveillance system: in Pompeii it opens, but it is done in safety, to protect both visiting tourists and above all the archaeological and artistic heritage that has been entrusted to us by history”.
