Her arrest at the end of 2018 marked the start of a major diplomatic crisis between China and Canada, the daughter of the founder of Huawei, and chief financial officer of the Chinese telecom giant, made her first major media appearance, 6 months after her release and her Back in China, Meng Wanzhou today presented the group’s annual results and announced record profits.
For this return to the light, Meng Wanzhouhad donned a sober black dress, she did not explicitly mention her setbacks in Canada, but she said to herself “ delighted “to be present again to announce the group’s results, ” four years later ” the events.
Results which show a record profit for 2021, with a 76% increase over one year to 16.2 billion euros, and this, despite the sanctions against Huawei which has been placed on the American blacklist par l’administration Trump.
Apart from a short statement upon his arrival on Chinese soil, Meng Wanzhou had never spoken publicly since.
On December 1, 2018, during a stopover at Vancouver airport, Huawei’s chief financial officer was arrested at the request of US authorities.
Meng Wanzhou was then accused of lying to circumvent US sanctions against Iran. The affair, which derailed into a major diplomatic crisis between China and Canada, concluded with an agreement in which Meng Wanzhou acknowledges the fact of “ false statements ” and ” concealed the truth about Huawei’s activities in Iran.
If this agreement is not contested or terminated by December 1, the proceedings against her will be definitively dropped.
