The Spanish mainland and Portugal report new heat records: The thermometer rose as high as never before in April since the temperature records began. According to the weather service, 38.8 degrees Celsius were reported in the southern Spanish city of Córdoba on Friday. In neighboring Portugal, the weather service reported a record 36.9 degrees, measured on Thursday in Mora in the center of the country.

In Spain, the authorities are warning of an increased risk of forest fires. The government in Madrid said that the forest fire watch would start immediately – a month and a half earlier than normal. So far this year, 54,000 hectares of land have gone up in flames across the country, significantly more than the 17,000 hectares at the same time last year.

Last year, Spain had already experienced the hottest summer since temperature records began. Experts blame climate change for the unusual heat.
