Exhibition of academic projects from the Schelotto Workshop of the Faculty of Architecture for the revaluation of the National Historical Monument of the Lagomar neighborhood in Ciudad de la Costa.

The projects, the result of the hard work of students from Taller Schelotto, are presented in the context of the recent declaration of Lagomar Sur as a National Historical Monument. This area, which covers 108 hectares, has been recognized for its unique and singular characteristics, with more than 30 small squares and winding streets designed by the renowned Uruguayan architect and landscape designer Román Fresnedo Siri. Since March 17, 2023, all its public spaces and the iconic lake that gives its name to the spa are protected by law 14,040.

The various academic projects that will be presented address a wide range of aspects for the comprehensive recovery of Lagomar. From the restoration of the lake, which is currently reduced and deteriorated, to the creation of themed squares designed for all ages, including areas dedicated to local fauna. In addition, initiatives such as reforestation, the inclusion of sidewalks and bike paths, bridges and roundabouts are proposed to integrate Lagomar Norte with the promenade and the beach. In a more cultural approach, the construction of amphitheaters, film schools and other ventures that will enrich the social and cultural fabric of the neighborhood are contemplated.

The academic works will be available to the general public in rooms 6 and 7 of the Faculty of Architecture, located at Bulevar Artigas 1031 in Montevideo, until December 15. During this period, the projects will be evaluated by teachers and professors, who will select the best to convert them into Pre-Projects. These, in turn, will be presented to departmental, national authorities and international organizations with the aim of obtaining the necessary funds to carry out the restoration and revaluation of the only National Historical Monument of this category in Canelones.

This project joins other important monuments such as the old town of Colonia de Sacramento, the Frigorífico de Fray Bentos neighborhood, Punta Ballena and Peñarol, consolidating Uruguay as a reference in the preservation and revitalization of its historical legacy.
