Recreational use of cannabis will be legal in Germany at the end of the year, as confirmed this Wednesday by the Minister of Agriculture, Cem Ozdemirwho has given a press conference in Berlin together with the Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbachto present their plans for a partial legalization of the drug.

This new legislation will allow private cultivation and distribution through non-profit groups, but not the widespread sale of cannabis in stores.

The new standard also provides for a pilot project to a small number of licensed stores in some regions to test the effects of a commercial recreational cannabis supply chain on public health, child protection and the black market.

Another novelty is the legalization of the acquisition and possession of up to 25 grams of recreational cannabis for personal consumption.

“The previous cannabis policy has failed. Now we have to take new paths,” Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said.

Many European countries, including Germany, have already legalized the cannabis for limited medical purposes. Others have decriminalized its general use, without actually legalizing it.
