Red Bull relentless, Sainz upside down

by time news

The domination of Red Bull and the great recovery of Leclerc but also the catastrophic first lap of Sainz and the complicated race of the French, find the tops and flops of the Grand Prix of the United States.

Tops

Implacable Red Bull et Max Verstappen

Eighth consecutive victory for Red Bull in Austin. The Austrian brand hit hard again in Texas, clinching victory with Max Verstappen (despite an eleven-second stoppage) and the constructors’ title with fourth place for Sergio Perez. The blue cars are dominant and this is confirmed with the 13th success this season of the now double world champion which equals the record of victories over a season held by Michael Schuamcher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013). Red Bull is at the top and paid a fine tribute to Dietrich Mateschitz, the founder of Red Bull, who died on Saturday at the age of 78.

Very solid Leclerc

Twelfth on the grid, Charles Leclerc finished in a good third place in Austin. A good result for the Monegasque who delivered a very clean race from start to finish. He thus signs a fifth podium in a row and takes second place in the drivers’ world championship from Sergio Perez for two points, 267 to 265 points.

Alonso, Vettel and Tsunoda come from afar

The Japanese was smiling at the end of the race. Starting 19th, Yuki Tsunoda signed the comeback of the day by taking the point of tenth place. In the fight for the top 10 throughout the race, Fernando Alonso nearly lost everything after a spectacular collision with Lance Stroll just before the halfway mark. Starting last, the Spaniard managed to take a good seventh place. On the side of Sebastian Vettel, there will be more frustration. Long in contention for the top 6, the German was penalized by a second catastrophic stoppage. Coming out 13th, he finally finished eighth with an overtaking in the last corners on Magnussen.

Magnussen’s wager

One save and the strategy paid off for Kevin Magnussen. 13th on the grid, the Dane kept his tires well, even if he suffered at the end, and scored two points with his ninth place. A good result for Haas especially at home.

Flops

Sainz, a race that came to an end

Imperial on Saturday with pole position, the Spaniard was expected on Sunday in Austin. It came to a head. Stuck on the starting grid, Carlos Sainz conceded first place in the first few hundred meters of the race. A missed start which was to become catastrophic at the first corner. Badly embarked, the Ferrari driver was hit by George Russell, penalized five seconds on the spot, and spun. Last and with a damaged car, the Iberian was forced to retire at the end of the first lap. Fast.

The French off the hook

Bad weekend for the Blues. Eleventh and off to a good start, Pierre Gasly had a time he had hoped to score points but the Alpha Tauri driver was penalized twice, five then ten seconds, and took a modest 14th place at the finish. Frustrating. Esteban Ocon couldn’t have done much better. The Alpine driver started from the pit lane and managed to climb back up, but he was content with eleventh place, on the verge of the points. Infuriating.
